Video and Online Interview Guide

During the Covid-19 pandemic, a sudden change brought about by social distancing was the way in which companies conducted interviews. Whilst the facility has been available for a long time, there was been a huge increase in online and video interviews. For a lot of candidates this can be the first time they’ve had to hold a formal conversation via Teams, Zoom etc.

Now that those restrictions are (thankfully!) behind us, virtual interviewing is still popular, especially at first stage.

As well as the essential interview preparation about the company and the role itself, here are some tips and hints to perform well during an online interview.

Make sure you have the right equipment and setting

You’ll need a device or laptop with a camera. You’ll also need somewhere to place the hardware so it remains steady. Do a trial run by calling a friend to test the system works.

Interruptions!

Try and minimise the chance of this happening by letting the household know what you’re doing. However not all members of the household may be as obedient as would hoped. You shouldn’t really be judged if this happens but it can disrupt your flow and confidence. If it does happen, don’t panic, try and remain calm.

Dress appropriately!

Not only will this make a good first impression, but it will also put you in the right frame of mind to perform well for what is still a formal process.

Turn off other devices

If the interview will be on your laptop, turn off your phone and try to minimise any other distractions. A quiet room also helps!

Notes

Try not to let them be a “prop” but it is worth having your CV and the job description in front of you, as well as a pen and paper to make notes.
